Deportivo Alaves were founded in 1921 in the Basque city of Vitoria-Gasteiz and have spent most of their history alternating between the first and second divisions of Spanish football. Their greatest moment came in 2001 when they reached the UEFA Cup final against Liverpool, losing 5-4 in a thrilling extra-time match that is considered one of the greatest European finals ever played.
