1. FSV Mainz 05 were founded in 1905 in the Rhineland city of Mainz and spent most of their history in the lower divisions. The club rose to prominence when Jurgen Klopp was appointed manager in 2001, guiding them to promotion to the Bundesliga in 2004. Thomas Tuchel also managed Mainz before going on to win the Champions League with Chelsea.
