Club History
Manchester United were founded in 1878 as Newton Heath LYR Football Club by railway workers and renamed Manchester United in 1902. The club's history was forever shaped by the Munich air disaster of 1958 which killed eight players, but Sir Matt Busby rebuilt the team to win the European Cup in 1968. Sir Alex Ferguson's 26-year reign from 1986 to 2013 produced 13 Premier League titles, two Champions League trophies, and established United as one of the world's most famous sporting institutions. Since Ferguson's retirement, the club has struggled to recapture those heights.
